Nice library, but low pay for the stress - Library Assistant Athens Regional Library System Employee Review

Pros

Some of the coworkers are really nice, and the location is great.

Cons

Very low pay compared to other local jobs, and is the lowest average library pay in the state. Some upper management doesn’t seem to know how crazy working with the public is, and most administrators are always upstairs and don’t see you doing your job to know what you do. Little to no chance for advancement; they seemed to hire outside people far more often than promoting from within. Working with the public is stressful, most especially in circulation. Since the self-checkout machines were installed, the staff doesn’t get to have “positive interactions” with library patrons. They only get to talk to people when they are upset or angry.

Pros

Great people, fun environment. Amazing programming, lovely patrons.

Cons

Many years have no raises because labor is poorly funded. No benefits. No advancement opportunities. No hope to move to full times or get benefits as there are NO full time positions for this job. Lower pay than many poorer county library jobs nearby-which is why turnover is often high. Far less pay than other in county professional jobs. Your job on day one is your exact job forever—there are no levels to work up to. No lateral moves. Forever understaffed and overworked and behind on shelving due to understaffing.
