Long hours, chaotic unclean environment, aggressive management. Never in my life have I been subjected to such awful working conditions. First and foremost the office was not a COVID safe environment, there was no mandatory temperature checks, mask wearing, hand sanitiser or social distancing in place, furthermore, the bathroom had no toilet paper, hand wash or hot water, these conditions aren’t acceptable at the best of times let alone during a global pandemic. As for the work, I was made to do several tasks which made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I had little to no guidance and very much felt like I was responsible for having to guess what my job consisted of. It was a vastly disorganised working environment and more often than not the response to most of the questions I asked was ‘I don’t know’, or ‘figure it out for yourself’. I was told from the offset I’d be working alongside a team that would help guide and teach me, considering my role was a junior position, no such help was given. The entirety of correspondence was conducted via WhatsApp, which I found to be odd and unprofessional, being given tasks via WhatsApp voice notes by a man going for a stroll with loud background noise made it incredibly difficult to decipher what on earth he was demanding from me, not to mention the amount of aggression being directed my way when I got something wrong after trying time and time again. Nothing constructive was said to me, only that I was wrong and had to try again, when I asked for more information to read to better equip myself with knowledge of what I was writing, I was told no such information exists and that I should stop asking for help and just get on with it, just ‘figure it out for myself.’ I found it odd that the role wasn’t remote considering everything I was doing I could have done from home and furthermore being being relayed to me electronically via WhatsApp. I wouldn’t have minded but as I mentioned prior the conditions were not COVID safe and I was fearful for my health. The director who was allegedly supposed to be working alongside me and training me didn’t arrive at the office until 3.30PM, I felt as thought my time was being wasted on several nonsensical, impossible to understand tasks, this kind of practice should not be allowed to exist. Furthermore, I felt as though I was being punished for not being telepathic and simply just *understanding* what was going on within the directors head. I’m sorry, but no one has those superpowers and it is unfair to treat them badly because of that fact.
