Exploitative, opaque, and greedy --- do not take this position - Fellow BallotReady Employee Review

Pros

I feel we did good work during the 2020 election, and my colleagues were some of the most talented people I've ever worked with; middle leadership (< VP) was generally excellent

Cons

Pretty much everything else. (First of all, note that most of the highly rated reviews come from contractors, not full time employees. This is an important distinction as the roles are very different. If you are applying for a full-time role at BallotReady, the contractor reviews won't be helpful. Note that the very first review on Glassdoor for BallotReady agrees with a lot I'm saying here) The electoral fellow position is a trap. You are woefully underpaid and expected to work crazy hours. You might say "that's to-be-expected at a political startup especially around campaign time!" That's true. However, I found out much later on that other employees were compensated with bonuses even though we worked just as hard and were paid SO much less. BallotReady has money and actively chooses to undercompensate its electoral fellows. Almost all non-white employees at BallotReady were electoral fellows as well, so not only are you underpaid, but you are also used to make the company look more diverse. The senior echelons of leadership (VPs and above) will constantly gaslight you about how much they value transparency and fairness and inclusion (don't get me started on the cult of Conscious Leadership they preach), while condemning hints of employee organization as "gossip". And yet, there is no transparency (other electoral fellows had to tell me about the bonuses for example). There are constant turf wars between various teams and you will certainly be pawns in them. If you're not an engineer, expect to feel like a burden with every ask that would make your job easier.

Pros

The people I've worked with have been phenomenal. Good work-life balance. There are interesting projects and the work we've done feels necessary and useful.

Cons

It is a startup. It will be scrappy at times.
