- I had initially declined the offer to join Beyond for fear of not fitting in, but was promised great things and growth. Be weary of their extremely skilled recruiter. As it turns out, I definitely was not a good fit for the retail team (more details below).
- The dominant vibe in the retail team is cold and unfriendly. The grand majority of the team are introverts who keep to themselves. Again, if you fit the personality they are looking for, you will be happy. If you are entrepreneurial and consider yourself an innovator you will find hostility to any of your ideas or suggestions for change.
- Worse yet is the POS team (within retail), dominated by one toxic employee who, as of now is the primary cause of 3 firings (including myself). This is an extremely difficult and moody individual. To paint a picture of the character, this is someone who would snap his fingers at me when he needed something and absolutely destroy me when talking to my superiors. His mistakes, there were many, went unnoticed. I definitely made mistakes too, but while those were reported every single time, I feel I had no recognition whatsoever for my achievements.
- The career counsellor assigned to me didn't really have any power to help resolve the situation. The resource directors above him, although I initially thought would hear me out, started leaning on things that were said to them by the toxic employee. This resulted in me getting on a performance plan.
- The person I worked with directly during my performance plan, while very happy with my work, was not even consulted before I was let go.
- I'm very self-aware and usually good at gauging how things are going. During my time at Beyond I experienced a massive disconnect between my perception and management's. I truly believe things would've been better had I not worked directly with this toxic employee.
