Where do I start? This place is one big bureaucracy. The cost and timelines for implementing projects are 3x or 4x relative to decently run organizations. I will talk specifically about the EA and HIT within BSC here:
1. Nepotism and favoritism are rampant. Promotions are given to those who are willing to follow the directions of the VP like zombies without any thinking on their own. A recent Director promotion is a prime example. The concerned would have trouble getting hired as an individual contributor let alone an executive position.
2. HIT group represents Health Innovation Technology. This group was formed a few years back as a startup within BSC with the idea of being self-supporting. Nothing useful has come out of this group except due to the efforts of one principal developer (hired within the last 18 months). The org is extremely top heavy with several director-level positions managing a couple of developers each without doing anything on their own. Most have no idea of any technology (other than a few buzzwords) let alone innovative technology.
3. Rules are created and enforced randomly. BSC does not permit employees to live outside of California. However, a director has been given the special privilege of working from the east coast. BSC is in close proximity to silicon valley and can't find local talent for a position paying upwards of 250K?
4. Yes Sir or rather Yes Mam culture. The culture from the top is one of extreme and unquestioning obedience more akin to factory assembly vs an innovative and open thinking tech company where you defend your ideas and position by logic, reasoning, and facts.
5. The whole process is becoming more and bureaucratic. To deliver any work you have to go through an excruciating number of reviews. And most of the work does not get implemented, yet the department keeps producing blueprints which just languish on share drives.
