Pros

staff discount on books, likeminded people (book lovers), no pressure to meet sales targets

Cons

No effort made to retain more experienced staff who are paid at the same (minimum wage) for retail workers as newbies. All staff expected to support and train new workers and no recognition of additional duties is given. Middle managers are generally supportive of any OHS issues raised however any changes to store operations requires the approval of the managing director who is highly emotional and takes any criticism as a personal attack. Web store is run by Singapore and is terribly outdated, however web store complaints are directed to in-store staff who are powerless to help and have to bear the brunt of any criticism.

Pros

The workplace is very comfortable to work and the atmosphere in the store is pretty good, people are nice to corporate with. Their tasks are like shelving books, stocking items, helping customers, and potentially running cashier when the store is busier. Having some knowledge of Japanese can be plus but not required. If you contribute yourself for years or you’re valuable enough to get promoted then you might have a role like assistant manager/buyer/project director/Event Coordinator etc. There’s a good chance but you need to stay focused on the tasks and stay motivated.

Cons

While their policies/rules are very strict, you should be reported if you don’t follow them properly. Just follow their rules and listen carefully for what they want to do, want you to do. They have a strict and conservative work culture but this is your dream job if you love Japanese pop culture and enjoy working with a team who those have same interests and passion.

Pros

Good coworkers and a great opportunity to practice Japanese conversational skill

Cons

Bureaucratic management with clear biases against non-Japanese employees. They also show little care for discrimination issues in the workplace.
