Pros
I decided to get involved with Bootcamps for Change because of its unique goal of improving the lives of homeless and at-risk youth through equitable access to fitness programming. Not only does this work support the physical health, mental health, and resilience of these youth, but also gives them an opportunity to learn about fitness and to be part of a community where they can feel like they belong. This potential for education, connection, and better health for youth experiencing homelessness is so powerful, especially because research has shown that precarious housing and life on the streets contributes to worsened health and shorter life expectancy. Bootcamps for Change not only has the potential to positively influence the lives of at-risk youth by improving their health and resilience, but also in preparing them for employment and obtaining secure housing in the future. The team I have worked with remotely during COVID-19 has included a variety of students and professionals dedicated to the cause, and who have worked well together and created a positive environment despite not being able to work together in the same physical space. Katie has led the team wonderfully, recognizing our successes and encouraging and motivating us all throughout my time with Bootcamps for Change.
