Misguided, overrated and shameless engineering practice - Senior Engineer Buro Happold Employee Review

Pros

Generous PTO policy, cheap healthcare costs for employees, non-existent dress code, lax working hours, outdoor terrace with picnic tables for having lunch, Board Room with good views of Lower Manhattan and NJ, some interesting projects (if senior management allows you to work on them).

Cons

If you're not a British expatriate, a graduate from a "BH preferred" high-end college/university or someone who kisses up to a partner/principal, you're not going anywhere. Very top-heavy organization. Non-existent technical direction, in fact the lack of technical expertise from this an international engineering consultancy is appalling. High turnover rate among engineers and HR itself. Work-life balance is nonexistent as it is customary for people to work 12-16 hour days; this is viewed as a badge of honor which is pathetic. No BIM department even though the company professes to be on the cutting edge of advances in BIM. Individuals with little to no design experience become project leaders and actually are promoted to senior management levels. Project leaders and directors acquiesce to clients' demands too easily, which compromises the project engineers' well-being (here's where the all-nighters come into play) and undermines the finished product. The company does not have any issue with laying-off staff at a moment's notice (there were 2 unexpected rounds of lay-offs during my tenure). The company is proud of its open office layout because it promotes collaboration and an "integrated design approach," but you'd be lucky if a partner/principal says "good morning" to you as they walk by.

Pros

Flexible work environment was great. They're pretty good on diversity.

Cons

Stressful work for sure, but I've heard it varies depending on your location. They do random layoffs.
