Pros
The job is very diverse in its claims handling methodology. The claims themselves center around causality claims, which means you are consistently investigating claims like a detective. This keeps the job fun, interesting and the investigations allow you to familiarize yourself with the railroad industry. Also, the investigations allow you to also form contacts and get to know the railroaders that contribute to both the claims investigations and the company's operations. I find the atmosphere dynamic and the work varies from property claims to railroad matters. You cannot get bored! The salary is very competitive and the headquarters are located in the heart of Montreal's Business District.
Cons
There was no actual training program established for this job except for some job aids and the manager allowing me to shadow him through claims handling. Also, I spent too much time creating my own job aids, which I felt slowed me down. I would have preferred a training program designed with on-the-job-training to have had a more experiential training. I felt my training was rushed and I was expected to know too much too soon. Although I am progressing and I like my job, I wish the training itself had been better planned and developed.
