Growing company that highly values engineers, but has its flaws - Software Engineer Callibrity Employee Review

Pros

Engineers are highly valued, remote work is almost guaranteed, good emphasis on work life balance (for the most part, they mostly prevent you from working 40+ hours a week). Good engineer culture and flexibility for working schedule and learning opportunities. The company is interested in growing, so they are often making org changes to plan for the future, be scalable, etc. So they are making an effort to be better Upper management is also very accessible and pretty open with the rest of the company about their decisions.

Cons

PTO is very low and they offer very little holidays for how much they brag about having work life balance. Benefits all around are average at best. Because they are a younger consulting company, they have a lot of unfulfilling projects and say yes to too much. So you could get put on a project that is a "butts in seats situation". Which for some this can be relaxing and stable... until you get pulled off the project which is to be expected in consulting, and then you could get put in another project where you aren't even developing, just on production support for weeks...This is the worst part about this job. If a client wants you to be a factory worker and pull a lever for 8 hours straight, in most cases it feels like Callibrity would allow that as long as the client is paying enough. Not all projects are like this, but more than 3 of these types of projects have existed for years and don't seem to be going away anytime soon. The company of course wants more outcome based projects, but they can't afford to turn the money they make on these boring projects that don't have much direction.

Pros

I love that we are a remote first company. They trust you to do your job and I never feel micromanaged and still feel connected to my team which can be hard to do when everyone is remote. Callibrity still organizes yearly events that bring us all together and we are encouraged to get together with teammates quarterly through fun funds they give us to do so. We get a generous yearly learning stipend to help us grow in our fields and careers. Big plus. If there is a project or initiative that sounds interesting to you even if it's not in your usual duties, they encourage you to give it a try or experience something new. I really appreciate that attitude in a healthy way because you have the opportunities to learn new things and are encouraged to do so if you want! Executive leadership is approachable and as transparent as you can reasonably expect them to be. They actually listen to their employees and genuinely care about their culture and making positive changes (like extending their offered parental leave benefit) that make people want to stay. The culture here is awesome. Other consultancies I've worked at can be kind of "old-school" and succumb to some of that boy's club behavior and rhetoric, but I don't get that here. It is welcoming, supportive, and (dare I say) sometimes fun.

Cons

I do wish our insurance was cheaper (it's not that bad really and Callibrity has taken on more of the financial burden when costs increased), but totally understand why it is the way it is. I know as we continue to grow as a company, those costs will eventually decrease.

Pros

Competitive pay, good benefits and education program.

Cons

Truly bizarre organization - one that prioritizes keeping the same couple of executives afloat, regardless of performance. From hiring family members as executives to bizarre firings, it's clearly a group that doesn't have expanding outside of Cincinnati as a priority. Or doing the right thing once the choice is presented to them.
