If you are experimented, you will find much more opportunities than being independent. Some managers are very good
Cons
Core business is project manager. Difficult to be understood if you are a developer, specially if you are specialist. You have a career path for technical (good point) but it is not necessary what you would expected Some manager are not good from an human perspective, (it is what matter to you if you are consultant) but are well recognized by the direction because of their commercial success.
