Pros

Kind, welcoming, intellectually engaged and hard-working junior staff. Mentorship and mentorship opportunities can be valuable. A chance to learn from and network with top-tier international policy experts.

Cons

Salaries for junior staff are far too low for the cost of living in DC, with very limited opportunities for raises or upward mobility. As a result, Carnegie's junior staff has become siloed and remains overwhelmingly from wealthier Ivy League grads or DC-connected families. There is a history of mistreatment and exploitation of junior staff that is ignored and mishandled by HR. This bad behavior can be swept under the rug when new junior staff enter and exit the organization every 1-2 years. Abusive managers are rewarded by the organization or face few consequences.

Pros

Truly the most intellectually honest, kind, and wonderful colleagues. Experiences vary depending on your program or department, but Carnegie is an inspiring and collegial place to be.

Cons

Would be great if HR could function better.

Pros

Carnegie was a good learning experience as a JF.

Cons

The stipend provided to JFs is not high enough to live in DC.
