Pros

There were no pros at Chester Zoo

Cons

Staff were treated like something you’d find on the bottom of your shoe by supervisors, coordinators and management who were out of touch and had outdated attitudes and a lack of skills and experience. They couldn’t organise a party in a distillery. You were never asked to do something nicely but were told in an abrupt way to do it as they saw bullying and manipulation as a way to get things done. Management had no respect for staff, Michelle being one of the worst. Toxic and a bully with no communication or even basic management skills whatsoever. Staff were regularly reduced to tears or put in places that they didn’t enjoy working causing mental health problems, stress and anxiety issues for many staff there. I wouldn’t recommend working at the zoo and I don’t recommend visiting either. There are many better tourist attractions out there which will not empty your pockets and drain your bank account.

Pros

Fulfilled a lifelong ambition to work at the zoo. Some interesting conservation work.

Cons

Depressingly elitist establishment with zero diversity. Privileged white people making money from other privileged white people. I was told that I didn’t fit in, and my contract was terminated during my probation period - in the same week as a family funeral and my bathroom flooded. Ridiculously long working hours and unreasonable expectations don’t allow for any life outside work.
