Pros
I can only speak on my experience with the Health Sciences Department, as this is where I teach. My review is as of May-2025. Pros: - Great support to faculty from current Dean of Health Sciences. - Faculty, as a whole, has strong working relationships and healthy dynamics with other staff and students. - Flexibility with teaching times create space for "work-life" balance or "moonlighting" opportunities. - Opportunities to contribute meaningfully to curriculum development and student mentorship. - Nursing program is designed and headed by the University of the West Indies (UWI) - Mona School of Nursing (Jamaica), providing uniform distribution of high quality and high-yield nursing content to the various island campuses/outlets.
Cons
- High fluctuation in expected salary. There is an hourly pay rate which takes into consideration the number of students enrolled {Thus, this becomes a "pro" only if enrollment increases each year - which is unpredictable}. So if the lecturer has 10 or less students enrolled, then that pay rate is EC$ 50/hr. For 11 - 20 enrolled students, the pay rate is EC$ 75/hr., and for lecturing 21+ students, the pay rate is EC$ 100/hr. {Keep in mind that this scale may only be attributed to part-time lecturing, i.e. adjunct roles}. - Health Sciences Department needs more support from Administration (Upper Academic Level Admin of College). Approval process of newly designed/created courses (example, workshops) takes tooooo loooong.
