Advancement and role opportunities can feel uneven and are based more on personal preference than merit. In my experience, favoritism existed within sales and business development leadership, which affected hiring and internal mobility. Concerns or differing viewpoints did not always feel welcomed or encouraged, making it challenging to speak openly.
Cons
In my opinion, leadership within sales, business development, and corporate sponsorships lacks ethical standards. I experienced and observed retaliation when expressing viewpoints that leadership did not agree with. Conversations with sales and business development representatives revealed multiple accounts of sabotage and envy towards account executives who are smart and gifted. Failed actresses and actors in sales and business development who never made it in the film industry will engage in unethical behavior because they are jealous of smart employees in my opinion. In my opinion, false narratives were sometimes created about employees, with the understanding that management would protect those involved. I observed a culture where personal insecurities and past career frustrations appeared to influence professional behavior toward high-performing account executives. There is a noticeable lack of diversity within the sales and business development departments. In my opinion, metrics and kpis are overstated and not accurate in the business development department because of poor leadership in my opinion. I believe sales managers and business development managers collaborate to remove employees whom they do not like personally in my opinion knowing their senior managers will support them. Sales managers and Business development Managers will interrupt and talk over you to silence you.
