Lack of appreciation for loyalty or high performance - Service Specialist Clermont County Public Library Employee Review

Pros

It's public service, so the work is rewarding and serving the community is rewarding.

Cons

The culture is toxic. Board of Trustees don't understand what a library is or how it's supposed to work. Administrative staff is so scared of losing their jobs that they won't advocate for the community, staff, or fully explain library services to the Board. Staff are overworked and severely underpaid, undervalued, underappreciated. Those staff members who don't perform well are allowed to continue with no intervention, and competent employees are punished by being required to pick up the slack. Sexual harassment claims are completely ignored. Only reason I'm still here is because we're organizing a union to give some power back to the employees.

Pros

I genuinely enjoy working here and have chosen to build my career with this organization. The library is deeply committed to serving its community, and that sense of purpose carries through to the staff culture as well. Coworkers are collaborative, kind, and passionate about what they do. Leadership encourages professional growth, and there are opportunities to learn new skills and take on meaningful projects. The work feels impactful, and it’s rewarding to be part of an organization that values access, education, and public service. Like any workplace, there are challenges and periods of change, but overall this is a supportive environment where people care about both the community and each other. I’m proud to be part of the team.

Cons

Public-facing work can be challenging and isn’t a good fit for everyone. Serving a diverse community means navigating different expectations, needs, and communication styles on a daily basis, which can be especially demanding during busy periods. Like many public service organizations, there are ongoing changes in priorities, programs, and processes, which requires staff to be adaptable and open to learning new ways of doing things. Balancing day-to-day responsibilities while adjusting to change can be challenging at times. These are typical realities of public service rather than organizational issues, and success in this environment requires patience, flexibility, and a genuine desire to help others.

Pros

Friendly staff, well planned training

Cons

Was not there long enough to give a fair assessment. (Not due to the organization.)
