Pros

I joined CompassX for two main reasons: 1. To be able to contribute to client and company initiatives that are larger than just the day-to-day cycle of project management 2. Work with local colleagues that are fun to hang out with and excited to see each other succeed Honestly, I was a bit nervous leaving a massive company with great job security but have found what I was looking for at CompassX. This isn’t the place to hide behind a large team and collect a paycheck, which I understand some people are happy with. At previous employers, I felt stuck in the day-to-day rhythm of mutli-year contracts with no opportunity to make a difference for the client and company. At CompassX, I have been able to directly contribute to client and company initiatives that have showcased my individual talents. I have seen many others do the same regardless of their experience. The leadership team really does listen to everyone and values your feedback from Day 1. There are opportunities to help with just about every aspect of the business, which has exposed me to much more than previous roles. It has been less than a year and I have already managed three projects at my first client. During this time, I have had complete autonomy to manage engagements using my personal style but have always received support from others when asked. Beyond the work, the people are extremely friendly and keep it casual. Everyone is eager to help if you request assistance with a deliverable and best practices are commonly shared across clients. Also, there are always events going on to meet co-workers in the SoCal area. The compensation is attractive compared to the larger firms and is based on meritocracy rather than tenure. Overall, CompassX has given me what I was looking for and I am excited to keep working with a growing company.

Cons

There are definitely some downfalls to working at a smaller company that just come with the territory. First, the interviewing process can take some time while you are finishing up your current role. It makes sense that a smaller firm would want to be 100% certain on their staffing decisions and you’ll want to be sure that this is the right fit for you but expect to spend some time getting to know a few people at the company before receiving an offer. In addition, the company matching on retirement plans is ~2% less than what the larger firms typically offer. Free pre-tax money is great, and leadership has acknowledged that they will try to work on this in the future. Finally, with shorter contracts than larger firms, you will have to learn a new aspect about the business or technology every so often. This can be somewhat frustrating if you find one project enjoyable, but also gives you the opportunity to showcase your skills to more people.

Thank you for your review and for recognizing our friendly, casual culture and unique career growth opportunities. We work very hard to match an individual's talents and interests with meaningful project work. And it’s very fulfilling when it all comes together! Typically, our clients can become nearly as invested in our consultant’s careers as we are, and work with us to create new opportunities for them. The result? Happier, more engaged employees and a better client experience! We concede that our interview process is lengthy. We want to ensure our candidates have a clear understanding of what it’s like to work at CompassX and are aligned to our values. This creates a win-win and fosters an engaged and connected community. We are so grateful you joined CompassX and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you will continue to do here! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

Pros

I joined CompassX from a mid-sized consulting firm and so far it's been a great move. I feel like my perspectives and experience are valued and are seen as a benefit to the company, and the people who I work with really seem to care. The work itself feels meaningful, with interesting projects where each win (big or small) seems to have a big impact and celebrated by everyone. Since joining, the practice areas seem to be evolving and maturing, and I've been able to sharpen my skills by being pushed outside my comfort zone at times. Unlike my last company, there are no mandatory CompassX office days, but I know where the leaders or colleagues are each week if I want to meet in person. I've also enjoyed the in person events and other team meet ups,

Cons

As it's a small firm, sometimes there can be missing pieces or gaps e.g. there aren’t always standardized tools, predefined templates or playbooks like at larger consultancies. Sometimes this means more freedom to do things your own way, but can be frustrating if starting from scratch too often. The teams are pretty lean so work can get busy for short bursts of time to meet client expectations. Also need to be willing to wear multiple hats or flex into other areas to keep the show on the road.

Creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and challenged is crucial to us, so it’s great to hear that this is reflected in your experience. We also appreciate your perspective on where we can continue to evolve – as a growing firm, we know there’s still work to do in building out more structure and tools.
