Pros

Work what days you want. No boss to deal with. Free to take fares in whatever area of valley you want, a good fare can come from anywhere . Good gas mileage Prius car option. Cars typically maintained pretty well.

Cons

Fees and high lease means you will only average about $10 hour (driving about 10 of 12 hours of shift.) Not enough calls, too many drivers in many ares of metro phx. Average of at least 3 no shows a day. Most calls are voucher calls discounted up to 40% off normal fare. You have to check fare log line by line or you wont be paid for all your calls (there are completed fares that dont show up on log.) Lots of wasted time/gas on no shows, duplicate fares, and cancellations.

Pros

Flexible hours, pleasant work (for the most part) if you enjoy people.

Cons

Driver starts out the day needing to make ~ $150 just to break even (lease, gas, dispatch fees). Exploitive labor practices that exist because Total Transit has found a loophole in the Fair Labor Act by calling the drivers Independent Contractors. Drivers receive no employee benefits and most cab drivers will average less than $3 an hour after expenses and taxes, some will end their shift owing money to the company. A day driver’s business will consist mainly of below meter fares (vouchers), fine for the cab company as they get their money no matter what but costs the driver $70 - $100 per day. As a result of Discount’s policy of over-hiring the wait time for a cab is usually 1.5 – 2.5 hrs, on busy days some cabbies will wait over 7 hrs. if they really need a car. Because of the low pay many drivers are exhausted from driving too many hours. To get a cab in a reasonable time frame and drive enough hours to turn some profit the driver will not have the chance to get more than 4-5 hours sleep per night, not enough to drive safely. Driver beware!
