Pros

This engineering firm tackles difficult research questions, whose findings feed directly into their engineering design department, which helps inform policy with a strong focus on reducing carbon emissions through means that are researched and tested in real buildings. Working for this company makes you feel like you are accelerating the building sector to a carbon-free future.

Cons

This company is relatively small, and though they have been around for a while, they are still figuring out how to make a growing business operate most efficiently. That said, leadership is taking advice from employees to make the company better so employees can make a significant and meaningful impact on the way the company operates.

Pros

Ecotope is a mission driven consulting firm that actually adheres to the mission, far more than most other consulting firms. I enjoyed a wide range of highly impactful work assignments ranging from decarbonization, heat pump implementation and beat practices, to applying all these lessons in building designs.

Cons

There is a huge breadth of what Ecotope takes on, which can be good and bad- I enjoyed the huge range of ways to engage with solutions to the climate crisis, but also struggled a bit to maintain a balance... Driven by my own ambition and strong alignment with the mission... Thankfully *not* driven by unrealistic production expectations from the company.

Pros

Work-life balance at Ecotope is excellent and the engineers here are very talented and really know their trade. You will be hard pressed to find better experts on the topic of Heat Pump Water Heating anywhere else in the AEC industry.

Cons

Ecotope suffers from really bad management, leadership, and a lack of transparency. The company is essentially run on the whims of the long-standing senior staff who are not open to ideas from any newer/younger professionals. It was both boring and utterly chaotic to work here - with PMs going on PTO during deadline weeks without notifying their subordinates or clients, mass layoffs due to the company's mismanagement of finances (going from bonuses & pay hikes to mass layoffs & furloughs within the space of 3 months), etc. No internal accountability whatsoever.
