Two issues: First management was very disjointed. There was a lot of infighting and an inability to work as a team. Some departments appeared that they would rather see another department fail and thus the company instead of helping. This kept management too busy to focus on issue #2.
Second, on average the floor employees don't care. Some cared, some wanted to care, but most didn't care about the success of the company. They were not motivated to do their job largely due to management's lack of interest in their needs (remember, they were fighting amongst themselves).
All-in-all it was a very difficult environment to work in
