Pros

- The people on the teams are generally wonderful people to work with - Independent work. No one is watching what we do every second - Decent health benefits, the Thrive cash is a cool little feature - Seems like a good culture due to the makeup of the teams, a lot of people are very dedicated to making a difference in higher education - Used to be a better work-life balance before everyone went remote

Cons

- No time for personal development and training. The team members from what I could tell, are desperate for training and discussions and there are almost no opportunities for shadowing or additional training. - Nothing comes from providing feedback to management. - Big focus on billable time vs actual development and quality work - Contracts/SOWs are poorly written and sales sells solutions to clients that don't actually work - Internal documentation is terrible and inconsistent - They do not listen to client feedback or complaints. If clients have been requesting a feature for decades, the company should consider implementing it and getting rid of outdated features that no one uses anymore. - No sense of direction. There's always a new initiative, but those on the front lines rarely see any of the impacts. - Constant turnover in management and in the executive area - Low pay compared to other competitors and it's very hard to get a raise. They only give raises once per year and it keeps getting later in the year. These are also only percentage raises unless you get a title promotion. - Very divided structure. Communication between departments is poor. They say they want to be a cloud based company but it's clear that the cloud area is disjointed. - Projects are set up to fail, clients aren't motivated and basic expectations to start a project are not met. - Need to hire more people. They are so focused on getting more billable hours, but there aren't enough people to do all the work. This is a conflicting message. - Not a lot of opportunities for career development and there is almost no training or team meetings like there used to be so it does not feel like we are a team anymore. - There was another comment about teaching racism and DEI. I completely agree with that poster and do not believe it benefits anyone to try and convince their employees that they have been racists all their life when that is not true. This company is going down a bad path if they truly want to be political and align themselves with the negativity that comes from that. - CEO is VERY motivated to push politics onto her employees. We don't need a written statement stating Ellucian's (her) views on every political event that happens. We're not activists and I don't want to be grouped in with a CEO's political opinions.

Ellucian Response

We are pleased to hear that your experience working with great colleagues who are committed to making a difference in education was consistent with our reputation for being a great place work. However, we are dismayed to hear about the negative aspects of your experience working for the company. That’s simply not who we are. Our culture consistently stands out as one of the reasons employees work at Ellucian. Ours is one committed to respect, learning and development and DEI. Our commitment is to make everyone feel like they belong, to support our ERG communities and make everyone feel empowered to speak up because everyone's perspective matters. We don’t politicize issues or impose political views on anyone, ever. On occasion, employees look for affirmation that they belong to an organization that respects the dignity of all human beings, and knows right from wrong. We are proud of our corporate social responsibility efforts and leadership position in the industry. It is part of our culture that helps makes Ellucian a desired destination for top talent.

Pros

Ellucian had some genuinely brilliant people. I mean real talent. Smart engineers, sharp support people who could look at a broken system and somehow see both the problem and the political disaster hiding behind it. A lot of people there cared deeply about higher ed. They understood that colleges and universities are not just “customers.” They are institutions trying to keep students moving, faculty supported, and operations alive with systems that often looked held together by duct tape, PLSQL scripts, and institutional trauma.

Cons

Then there was the C-suite. Every company has executives. That’s normal. But this group often felt less like corporate stewards and more like LinkedIn influencers who accidentally wandered into an ERP company. They seemed distant. Aloof. Not deeply engaged with the actual work, the clients, or the people carrying the weight. There was a lot of executive polish, a lot of corporate language, a lot of “vision,” but not always the kind of grounded leadership that makes employees say, “I trust these people with the future of the company.” At times, it felt like the people closest to the customers understood the business better than the people paid the most to lead it.
