Pros

* With a 50%+ turn over rate you always get to meet new people! * You will NEVER forget who the CEO is, because he talks about his title at every single meeting at least like 100 times * You will never develop a big ego, because you will always be told how bad you are at your job and the many, many ways you could improve * With years and years of bad reviews all saying the same thing you know that this company is dedicated to being consistent! * You will save a ton of money on vacations, because getting one approved takes an act of Congress at this company

Cons

* Insane turnover rate.. Over half the exec staff has quit in the past six months, and they fired or drove out EVERY single person on the marketing team late last year. The department literally had to be built again from scratch. * Micromanagement to the Nth degree: The owner feels he knows how to do everyone's job much, much better than they could. He is happy on a moment's notice to issue heavy handed directives on how things should be done, and he isn't afraid to let you and everyone else know how superior he is. * The Gallup poll scores are horrible, and management blames the employees for it instead of doing anything to address the toxic environment that has destroyed morale * Fake reviews on Glassdoor to bump up their scores * While the owner is taking draws and sucking money out of the company he quibbles over even the most minor expenses to help people do their jobs * Salaries across the board are lower than industry norms * You better love wearing lots of different hats, because you will be loaded up to the breaking point with work * Overall just a horrible, negative, and toxic place to work. Everyone I know there is looking for a new job.

Thank you for your honest feedback. I sincerely apologize that you did not have a positive experience with us at Email on Acid. That is certainly not the outcome that any of us want to hear from former colleagues. You are correct in that we are experiencing a temporary employee retention issue. Our employee turnover is due to both voluntary and involuntary departures. We have made some significant changes in our culture over the past couple years and that can sometimes be disruptive. Not everyone is going to like or agree to the changes that are being made which is perfectly understandable. I certainly don't want, or expect, anyone to work at an organization in which they are not happy or don't feel successful. We are certainly not a perfect organization nor am I a perfect CEO. I will make mistakes. My promise and commitment to my teammates is that I will always be accountable for them, own them, and put 110% into learning and growing from those mistakes. Pros

-Your non-management coworkers are probably going to be supportive, funny, lovely people. -They seem to let a lot of people in who don't necessarily have a tech background. If you're looking to get your foot in the door in the industry, they may take a chance on you. -Every interview you have moving forward, you get to have a hilarious company name on your resume.

Cons

CEOs aren't hired because they know how to code, how to handle customer service, how to manage finances or how to run a marketing campaign. They're there to lead, speak on behalf of the company, reassure employees during tumultuous times and occasionally weigh in on those big-picture ideas. That's not the case at EOA. The CEO is too involved with the day-to-day operations of the company. The environment feels chaotic and frenzied as the product features and strategy morph on the whims of the CEO. The "culture" they tout feels like a band-aid for more deep-rooted problems. In recent years, management has tried to focus on changing the culture to improve the turnover rate. Fixing the culture seems to be a lot of talk without any real results, though. There's conversation after conversation about improving employee morale. Core values are established. Employee outings are scheduled. New mantras are written. But all of this won't do much for morale when yet another person is fired. And another. And another. The real culture here feels like one rooted in paranoia. Management is constantly worried about what non-management is saying behind their backs. Non-management is constantly worried that they'll be the next on the chopping block.

As the CEO, I take full responsibility for your experience and I sincerely apologize that it was not positive. I don't ever want anyone to leave Email on Acid and say it was a waste of their time. That is not fair to anyone. I will certainly reflect on your feedback to see how I can provide a better experience for our current and future teammates. I also understand that everyone is not a perfect fit in our culture and it has changed significantly over the past couple of years. Since joining Vistage (an Executive Coaching Organization) 4 years ago, I have realized the importance that the culture plays in the success of the organization and with my teammates. Through this coaching, it has become clear to me what I want our culture to be and what I will not allow within the organization. We’re regularly talking about our culture and working together to bring the vision to reality. Developing a great culture is a journey, not a destination. I want Email on Acid to be an honest, trustworthy, open, collaborative, fun and inspiring environment. It's a place in which we speak for ourselves, search for truth, assume positive intent, own our mistakes and where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow - both personally and professionally. We listen to understand. We are diverse and inclusive. What I don't want it to be is a place where people lie, steal, cheat, think they are better than others or talk negatively behind each other's backs. I believe talking negatively behind someone's back is the single, most destructive thing to a culture. If you are talking negatively about someone to another colleague, it immediately erodes any trust between those two individuals and across the organization. That distrust spreads like a wildfire and I cannot allow that to happen at Email on Acid. I am certainly not perfect. I take complete ownership in my mistakes. My promise to my colleagues is that I will always reflect and learn from those mistakes. I have that same expectation for everyone within the organization. Is everyone going to always like me or agree with my decisions? Absolutely not. It's not my job to be everyone's best friend. As the CEO, it's my job to think about the organization as a whole and to professionally challenge people so they are constantly learning and growing. It's my belief that if I don't push people to be the best they can be and to challenge assumptions, I am failing them as a leader. We try to do our best to explain what we stand for, what we promote and what values must be upheld in building our culture. We try to espouse what will erode culture and therefore what we can’t tolerate before someone is hired. Based on your feedback, we certainly have some work to do to make that more clear.
