Pros

Extrel is unique in that everyone there wants you to succeed. Many of the employees have been there for several years which fosters this, "when you're here, you're family" vibe. Extrel does a lot to bring the staff together. There is a meal, dessert or corporate social event 2-3 times a month.

Cons

Physically, there are not a lot of windows. But, the location is great for a lunchtime walk.

Pros

Great people who enjoy what they do. Management who have developed a vision for the company and who are actively trying to figure out how to get there. Incredible opportunities for younger employees if they know where to look. Very flexible with time off and vacations. Excellent health care, vision, and dental. World class products that have lasted the test of time. Company encourages activity in the community through volunteering and outreach. Also encourages activity in the scientific community through time off to attend society meetings and other professional activities. Promotions are available to the young employees, they may need to be creative to find them sometimes however.

Cons

Compensation is on the low side. Often have the issue of a small company in that employees are expected to perform 2-3 people's job descriptions without recognition of this inefficiency. Some older employees are incredibly complacent and too comfortable in their positions but this can be an opportunity for a younger, more ambitious employee. Hours can be an issue. Some management (not all by far) prefer seeing you at work over how much you get done at work which can be frustrating for those who like to take work home or work on weekends (as opposed to the typical 9-5 drudgery). Not necessarily the most PC place to work but also not a "hostile" work place.

Pros

Some nice people in a bad situation. Interesting technology.

Cons

The words "toxic" and "dysfunctional" only scratch the surface here. While there are many nice competent people who work at Extrel, management thrives on overbearing control, distrust, and obsessive compulsive behavior. They read employees emails, eaves drop on conversations, and monitor comings and goings to the point of sick obsession. There is no sense of professionalism, and HR people who have integrity leave quickly. There is clear favoritism, some nepotism, and an acceptance of bad behavior due to tenure. There is inconsistency in the implementation of policies often baed on personal relationships/friendships, and management takes employees' hotel rewards points from the three major trade shows for their personal use--taking their families on vacation. Toxic. Dysfunctional. Just beware.
