Pros

Outstanding opportunity to “see” inside the operations of organizations Working with smart people who are always professional Fantastic preparation for understanding the legal working-world First-class training and real world experience concerning antitrust law and consumer protection issues You will understand why government is so wasteful and gets so little done for citizens by the end of your time at the FTC.

Cons

Few to no opportunities for career advancement In many ways, Honors Paralegals are organized and managed as if they are throwaway workers Emphasis is placed on recent (young) undergraduates who desire a recommendation from an attorney for law school. If you are not in your 20’s, or law school is not in your future, the experience can be demeaning. Few, if any, paralegals find employment elsewhere in the federal government

Pros

Great colleagues who are smart and creative and dedicated to the mission; the feeling that you've made a difference for regular people; challenging and varied work that never gets boring

Cons

Political upheaval every 4 years; no telework at all (as of spring 2025) so you burn through leave; pay Is good for government but does not compare to private practice salaries
