Pros
I think the people here are genuinely personable and pleasant to work with. I always enjoyed my time in the office. Despite being a 7 or 8 year old company, they are just coming up with standard operating procedures, which I suppose is a good thing? …. Parking was easy to find. There’s an ice maker in the break room.
Cons
A major red flag to me was when I was about 6 weeks into being at Fairgrove and the CEO passes by my desk says “oh, you’re still here!” followed by a fist bump. He was genuinely surprised I had not quit. That was shocking to me. Later on, I realized why there is very high turn over. Read on - The properties Fairgrove manages are mostly in very poor condition, which makes the job nearly impossible to keep up with. I don’t think the CEO is on the same planet as employees. During a company wide meeting, he stated we are just not accepting any properties to manage anymore. That same day I was handed very challenged properties to manage that were in an emaciated state of neglect. These people are the kind that want to gaslight you into believing you’re just not working hard enough. In reality, it is too much work for one person. If you manage the LA portfolio, you are expected to commute to Irvine on a regular basis. They apparently plan to open an office in Long Beach as the “LA office”, but it’s still REALLY out of the way if you live in LA proper - it’s still quite a drive. VP is hypercritical and LA regional manager as is a novice. Both with very low emotional intelligence and poor people management skills. These are the characters you’re dealing with on a day to day, just a heads up. Guy in the business development department is the kind of person who will pee on your leg and tell you it’s raining, with a big smile. This is the person getting contracts with dilapidated buildings that you now have to save from literal collapse. It’s a very traditional corporation, they’re not reinventing the wheel here. Conventional office politics, dare I say antiquated i.e; execs can bring their pets to work, but not you. Working from home is also frowned upon. It’s not for young and forward thinking people. Your performance is measured on compliance, not on thinking outside the box. I put 12,000 miles on my car in 3 months for this job, it was just excessive. Maintenance department is impossible to work with. They do really shoddy work, which in turn gives you more work to do. You have to be there for a year to start saving for your company sponsored 401k, kind of a crappy deal. Death by meetings, you’ll see what I mean.
