Pros

Distributed team with option to go into an office in Ireland and the UK Interesting product space

Cons

- Frightfully inexperienced product team with no direction and frequent sudden direction changes. product team are all brainwashed and preach about how "fantastic and unique it is to have a CEO who still writes code". Obviously, they are unaware of the technical implications of such a conflict of interests - very small and understaffed design team - the CEO is a megalomaniac and regularly interferes with the engineering team. He also writes code himself and hands it to the tech team to iron out his bugs. - CEO has temper tantrums when staff don't respond to his whims on weekends - devs are moved from their area of expertise to a completely unrelated area of the stack and expected to hit the ground running. In fact, they're not even told they're moving at all until they have been noted absent from their new teams standup. - middle management are employed as spin doctors, to put a twist on whatever outlandish nonsense Upper management are planning. For example: Dev: "I'm concerned about what X said in the all hands about how we should all be working till 10pm or we are not welcome at Flipdish" Middle management: "oh well he's from a sales background, don't mind him." You need to get your story straight; which is it?! The same goes for the in-name-only work life balance directive. How can one only work from 9-6 when you are regularly multitasking 4 or 5 tickets at once that need to be finished yesterday By the way, they also like to distance themselves from the word "ticket" to sound less like a feature factory which is really telling. The code based have minimal code coverage and there is exceptionally poor product documentation - The CEO is completely at odds with not only the well being of Flipdish employees, but ultimately the company itself. - inconsistent pay packages. A 10k difference for the exact same role is not normal. Some employees are paid significantly more than others when they are obviously less experienced because... Well, I don't know why, but that is the case. - before I left they tried to force engineers to work on call for free. I was told the remuneration is time in lieu. Wow! Fantastic, lucky me! what a joke, with all the 10 - 12 hr Days I've worked, I've never gotten time in lieu. Pay engineers properly. And also, it is up to us to reject this sort of abuse. - one of the other reviews mentions the cowboy coders. Off the back of this there are so many completely inappropriate titles. How are you a senior dev if you don't know how to write a unit test? it's shocking how far absolute chancers will get in this industry if a startup is scrambling to get more anonymous deskflesh to prove it is "growing" to stakeholders. I wouldn't even mind if it wasnt the case that you are also responsible for the less performant members of your team (at the same level, not talking about juniors or reports here). I was reproached once for a colleagues error even though I pointed out to him that it had to be fixed. He ignored my advice because he didn't know how to write a test and got both of us in trouble. - There are no material benefits, not even paid sick leave in Ireland! If you’re lucky and have a decent line manager, they will turn a blind eye to reporting sick days so you won’t get your pay docked. Please don't be fooled by these other reviews. I can say hand on heart that you will be exploited by these people for such little reward. I'm burnt out and completely cynical about the industry after working here. It's a horrible feeling and everything feels so bleak. Flipdish gets the last laugh though, as their lack of health benefits means I have to pay out of pocket for a health issue caused by the long and stressful hours of working here. Save yourself the blood sweat and tears and avoid Flipdish like the plague.
