Pros

The product is genuinely helpful for customers and their end-users. Garner is also good at process documentation and sharing company updates. Employees get access to Garner, which is cool.

Cons

There is a pervasive lack of trust throughout many departments. This could be due to shorter tenures and rapid growth. I also suspect it is due to the feedback/transparency culture, where 360 feedback is shared in a spreadsheet for the entire company to view, which in theory is nice but in reality it encourages motivation through blame and shame. This lack of trust impedes work by constricting autonomy and prioritizing perfectionism. It inhibits the formation of genuine internal relationships, as most people are quite guarded. Other things that are concerning: -dearth of female leaders -"bait and switch" job descriptions -a GTM strategy that is convoluted, wordy, confusing -the individuals most successful at Garner seem to embody an almost robotic, relentless work ethic -employees are encouraged to dissect others' work in order to appear intelligent and engaged, as modeled by senior leadership -most people I encountered to felt a serious loss of confidence in themselves during their time at Garner -threat of retaliation for articulating concerns feels omnipresent

Pros

Working at Garner Health as a software engineer was a fantastic experience. Two things really set this company apart: the mission and the people. First, the mission is genuinely impactful. It’s incredibly motivating to come to work every day knowing that the code you are writing directly helps people find high-quality, affordable healthcare. Second, the talent level across the engineering team is top-notch. I was constantly surrounded by smart, driven, and collaborative engineers who raised the bar and helped me grow technically. The culture is highly supportive, ownership is encouraged, and there is a real focus on building things the right way.

Cons

Like any fast-growing company, things move quickly and priorities can shift. You need to be comfortable with ambiguity and adaptable to change. These transitions could be handled better with clearer communication.

Pros

-A lot has changed at Garner in the last several years, for the better. There used to be a huge culture of micromanagement from the top down, and now that we’ve grown larger that has shifted -High value product with a ton of growth potential that’s actually making a difference -really great peers who are ambitious and mission-driven -good salaries -lots of opportunity if you like to build and iterate -interesting ever changing work -management that really cares about me

Cons

Your experience at Garner really depends on your department. Some work you to the bone, some have weak leadership, others are great. Working directly with the CEO is tough as he is more of a micromanager. My team doesn’t happen to have that issue or a work life balance issue so much, so my experience has generally been good. - low diversity, likes to recruit from consulting firms too much -if you aren’t efficient or don’t use the tools available, work life balance will suffer
