Laid back, but no sense of pride in work done - Engineer General Dynamics Electric Boat Employee Review

Pros

Great laid-back atmosphere, flexible hours, non-competitive workplace so co-workers really try to help you out, General Dynamics will help subsidize your master's degree, opportunity for travel to exotic locations (Australia, England, Spain) for people with experience in a certain capacity, ability to switch departments keeps the workplace as fresh and interesting as you make it, enough work going around that you would eventually find something you like to do

Cons

Old buildings, loss of ownership of any of the work you do, endless feedback cycles, unrealistic deadlines, there are no statute of limitations (you can be asked the reasoning behind something you did 10 years ago), the time it takes to complete a task is extremely long since everyone has input, no motivation to excel since job promotions are time based not performance based, unclear expectations for what needs to be done for task

Pros

If you're under 30, the pay can be pretty decent starting out. Pay and benefits start when you start training. If you like downtime, there's plenty.

Cons

The leadership is incredibly dysfunctional and everything is behind schedule. The environment is literally toxic and you will not get a respirator, just an N95 mask. Management is understaffed and unsupported. There's a lack of seasoned experienced employees, which means the young people coming in aren't being trained or mentored properly. You might have a 19 year old kid doing stupid and dangerous stuff right next to you and there's no supervision. Sick and vacation time is so small that running out of hours is the #1 way to get fired.
