Pros

You get a very generous 10% pension that you don’t contribute to. But I felt guilty taking it knowing that it’s a charity and hat the money could go to the girls. Nice office in central soho. But again, it’s a charity so I’d forego state of the art decor and tech if it meant more was being done in the field.

Cons

Very top heavy with directors and senior directors. Also very white middle class and SLT is primarily male. Culture of bullying was apparent and when mentioned to HR very little was done about it. Staff turnover is very high which is unsurprising. Many roles have a distinct lack of clarity and many managers are ill equipped (not necessarily their fault) to deal with managing teams. The workloads are always hectic and last minute due to zero strategy and all the ‘brands’ have different strategies and goals and no one ever seems to think about the bigger picture or long term impact. TEGA is amazing and should probably just become a standalone product. Marketing and PR all seems to be outsourced to expensive agencies and most flights to the country offices seem to be business class... a lot of time spent arranging fancy dinners for rich American wives rather than out in the field with the girls. Also directors receive a bonus...which felt pretty inappropriate for a charity.

Girl Effect Response

Hi there, I am sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience while working at Girl Effect. We’re very proud of the diverse and incredibly talented people who work at Girl Effect and the mission we’re all a part of to empower girls around the world. However, clearly you’ve not had the experience we would like all of our people to have. Some of what you have written is not an accurate reflection of our policies, but we take comments like this incredibly seriously. Especially in relation to bullying as we’re really proud of our culture here. If you would like to, I'd be more than happy for you to reach out to me personally to discuss your experience. Best, Dee

Pros

Amazing culture--everyone is encourgaging and great team players. Ability to work flexibly. No micro management--everyone is expected to do quality work and are given liberty to make that happen, in their own unique way. Very empowering environment.

Cons

Work is global, so at times difficult to communicate with team members due to timezone differences.
