Pros

The community of who they serve is truly organic and rich of ideas.

Cons

There are a lot of high expectations for a few and low expectations for people who have been there longer. It's interesting to see how minority staff members are hounded with tasks while YT staff are able to set boundaries and have a "less productive" day. They praise mental wellness, but minority staff members are pressured by leadership to work inhumane hours by imposing unrealistic deadlines and responsibilities. It’s a micromanaging culture down to the point where weekly updates to “braintrusts” are created. In this, staff are required to document all projects they’re working on and questioned on what they're doing by the hour. They imposed a productivity and time logger to make sure you’re working your hours. Legacy leadership lacks transparency in communication. There have been internal complaints going back years about racism, elitism and classism. Legacy leadership are grossly manipulative, abusive to staff and basically conning funders into think they’re serving underprivileged youth. No idea how they’ve gotten away without getting financially audited when they’re barely funneling the funds back into the communities they claim they serve. They have DEI internal training but it’s ineffective unless legacy leadership actually take a back seat and make space for “different perspectives” to lead. They've been running a campaign promoting different perspectives in the community, but internally they will shut minority ideas down. Run far, far away. Everyone ignores the red flags because they're passionate about the mission. Their mission makes it tempting to accept the role, but they lie in the recruitment process about how wonderful and equitable they are.

Pros

I have so much respect for Girls Write Now as a former employee and mentee. They are phenomenal to work for.

Cons

Pretty much the same downsides of working for any kind of nonprofit.

Pros

The organization has a compelling mission to support young women and gender-expansive individuals in creative writing and career development. Opportunities to work with talented mentees and develop meaningful programming. Provides an outlet for creative professionals to contribute to an inspiring cause.

Cons

Microaggressions and racist undertones permeate the workplace culture, with minimal acknowledgment or efforts to address these issues meaningfully. Decisions often reflect a lack of diversity in leadership, leading to a disconnect between the organization's stated values and its internal practices. Staff feedback on these critical matters is frequently ignored or downplayed, leaving employees of color feeling undervalued and unsupported.
