Pros

During this year, I had a schedule that was very erratic due to graduate school interviews. This job is the perfect complement to any scheduling needs because you dictate when you will see your students and how many you will take on at one time. My boss was in constant contact and meaningfully discussed student pairings as to not create unfavorable situations. I can really say that GTP has its employees' backs. Specifically, I really bought into the SAT and ACT prep courses. I felt they were unique and offered students an advantage. I never at any point felt pressured to take on additional work or to do anything I that made me uncomfortable.

Cons

You need a car because most tutoring is at the students' homes.

Pros

Goldstein Test Prep allowed me to gain some teaching experience, earn an income while having an irregular schedule, and apply skills that I've learned as an academic. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in December and was "docked" in Pittsburgh while I was waiting to go to graduate school in the Fall. This meant that I had an "awkward" window of availability in Pittsburgh, on top of an irregular schedule due to travel for graduate school visits. Because the appointments are self-set, I was still able to work through Goldstein Test Prep while also holding part-time research and teaching positions at the University during the day-time. Furthermore, although I worked as a temporary part-time employee, I was able to use my background in mathematics and writing that I've developed through my education - this was a much more fulfilling position than simply working in retail or at a restaurant.

Cons

You will likely need a car for this job, and some of the appointments can be far (20-40 minutes away). If you are a student and you are involved in many extra-curricular organizations, it may be difficult to balance your time with the tutoring appointments since they occur in the afternoon/evenings of the week, and you will need to be away from campus at the times when many university organizations tend to meet. Fortunately, Mike (the boss) is pretty understanding and willing to work with you by trying to organize nearby appointments with each other so you can minimize driving time. Also, if you need to limit your hours based on your university activities, Mike will work with you to re-organize your tutoring schedule.

Pros

I joined Goldstein Test Prep in 2013 after teaching for Detroit Public Schools and Chungdahm Learning in Seoul. Goldstein offers flexible scheduling, excellent health and retirement benefits, and highly competitive salaries for both full- and part-time educators. The management model at Goldstein is collaborative; every teacher is encouraged to participate in improving the program and to share the skills and techniques that make their classes and individual tutoring sessions effective. The curriculum is excellent and regularly improved with teacher input. Engaged and engaging educators are eagerly welcomed into a friendly, solutions-oriented environment. Class sizes are small, and for someone who loves teaching without having to be constantly grading, this has been an excellent position.

Cons

Both full- and part-time positions are hourly; there are no salaried positions (but picking up hours has never been a problem for me). Goldstein contributes a monthly stipend and car allotments to add stability to compensation, in addition to generous health and retirement benefits. A reliable car is an absolute necessity. Travel can be extensive, but is compensated, and never required.
