Pros

A lot of the customers were fun, amazing people that I grew very close to. There was never a dull moment either!

Cons

I do not even know where to begin. The emotional abuse from upper management was out of control. I was berated constantly, and scolded in front of customers. Our manager would not let us go to the bathroom during our shift. She would guard the bathroom door , and if she saw you go to the bathroom during your shift, she would change your timesheet and cut your hours for the day. Our manager also was very racist, and would constantly harass and degrade one of my Asian coworkers, telling her she's too "Asian" and not to speak because no one understands her. We told this to upper management, but they did not believe us. We were given vacation hours, but were not allowed to use them. If you requested time off, you were scolded for "abandoning" the job and most of the time, you're time off request was denied. I was sexually assaulted by one of our customers, and when I told my manager, she said that he's a paying customer and that he was allowed to continue to shop there (where he continued to harass and assault me.) I was also attacked by another customer. He beat me up (clearly he was mentally ill) and left bruises on my body. I was refused medical help, and was told not to call the police or I would be fired. The man continued to shop there and I just had to hope that he would not attack me again. Goodwill are corrupt, greedy, disgusting people who don't give a crap about their employees. Please do not work for them.

Pros

I enjoyed my customer service work - helping people as a part of a larger mission to help the community. I found it rewarding to advance to supervisor and pick up new skills and responsibilities such as safety auditing and supply management. And of course it was always interesting to sort all the interesting and unique donated goods.

Cons

A change in management over the past year+ has been very difficult for me. I found my work more heavily scrutinized and criticized in ways that felt unclear and unfair. The new manager had a clear bias towards certain employees, gossiped openly and loudly and often with explicit HIPAA violations, and made it literally impossible for me to keep track of inventory supplies as a part of my responsibilities. Communication between management and associates - and even between management and supervisors is very poor. Workplace culture has seemed to shift from being very flexible and people-oriented to more stringent on policy and focused on revenue. Trust in upper management is strained. Day to day if you stick to your task and focus on production, you'll probably do well. But for me it isn't what it used to be.
