Pros
- GRAPHEK produces pretty great print work because it's designers are highly creative. - Because of the small staff, the designers also get to touch a lot of different projects. - The employees are generally good people and fun to be around. - Monthly potlucks are really fun and delicious.
Cons
The creative director is also the owner of the business and her time is not managed well because of it. Most of the designers are not only doing design but also project management, writing, admin, everything. Which, is a great learning experience but the designers have to take on all of these rolls without being payed to do so. The starting salaries are way below average. There is also no senior level designers so many of the employees are straight out of school with no one to learn from since the creative director's time is sparse as is her knowledge of the adobe creative suite. This is a print studio and even though there are a few web designs in GRAPHEKs portfolio the owners really don't know much about web or designing for web and rely on the knowledge of their employees. Overall this is a high anxiety place to work in with a lot of pressure put on the designers. Internally it's a battle for everything. Days off, a mouse pad, time, etc. The benefits are horrible, the pay is equally horrible and the policies are just wacky. But because it is such a small place that hires designers right out of school, they can get away with it. It seems like a great place to work at in the beginning but everyone realizes how difficult it is to be there and will leave, usually within a year.
