Pros
- Free gym membership and use of all classes. - Once gym closes at 11pm you can use the gym after when no one is there. - Job is relatively easy. - M colleagues were very nice and friendly. - DJ's play good music. - Career progression opportunities are there. - Interview wasn't too hard, was a group interview with about 20 or so people. Questions weren't difficult, they mainly just want to see your personality.
Cons
- Poor Management: Not sure about other clubs but E&C had a new manager when I joined and she was hardly there. Had members of the gym come to reception to complain about issues like aircon etc. and asked to speak to the manager but she wasn't in so we received complaint's about her never being there. Didn't look very good, especially when we'd ask other managers where is the gym manager and they'd respond with "Not sure". - Didn't like this manager to bring her dog into the gym and leave it in the office for hours, she didn't ask anyone about dog allergies prior to this. It also pee'd everywhere which left a horrible smell. - Other managers not being present when they should be. I've never worked in a job before where a manager isn't present throughout the whole entire shift. The managers seem to get pick of all the 'good shifts' aka 10am-7pm usually. The reception team were trusted to open and close the whole gym, sometimes on your own while dealing with members who may have had complaints. Felt like this is quite a big responsibility for just a receptionist. Would suggest that managers take a range of shifts and give other colleagues a chance to have varied shifts also instead of openings and closings. Couldn't really have a life outside of work because of this. - Being left on reception on your own when it's peak time was a lot to deal with. Having multiple members standing in a queue coming to you to ask questions, you have emails to answer, phone queries, stocking the fridges, rolling towels etc. I really think it should have been a minimum requirement for at least 2 people to be on reception at all times, no matter how busy/quiet it is. - Manager saying they needed more staff but would only hire people on 8 and 16 hour contracts? - Had signs put up behind reception stating 'no phones allowed' to the staff. Was a bit childish to do this. - Staff discount could have been better, especially how much they earn in gym memberships - only 30%. Better than nothing I suppose. - Didn't like the fact that certain receptionists would take longer breaks than others. - Not being able to sit down at reception and having to stand there for about 8/9 hours is quite ridiculous. Feet can get really sore. Not quite fair when you have people in the office sitting down all day. - Having to call members to ask them to pay for debt when they stopped paying their gym memberships. I really don't think this should have been a job for receptionists to do, sometimes having people scream down the phone at you like it was your fault. - Pay is absolutely shocking for a 'premium gym'. Didn't surprise me that a lot of people left to go to Third Space which pays a lot better. I think the responsibilities the reception team had definitely outweighed what we were getting paid. - Dealing with the attitude and entitlement of certain members. I know this isn't Gymbox's fault but definitely put a dampener on your shift when you were being spoken down to. - The sauna/locker room/shower situation in Gymbox E&C was outrageous. Having countless members complain and quit because of very inappropriate members was very disheartening to hear. I know this may be something hard to control but just be warned if you do use these facilities in E&C.
