Pros

Any Pros I may have had initially quickly dissolved into complete and total chaos.

Cons

As an African American woman who devoted 25 years of my life as a legal secretary before retiring, I was hesitant but hopeful when I decided to come out of retirement for some contract work at Horn LLP. I had just welcomed another grandchild, and I figured this would be a good opportunity to earn some easy money while staying engaged. Unfortunately, my experience has been anything but positive. **Expectation vs. Reality:** I was promised a flexible and respectful work environment, but what I encountered was the opposite. The work culture felt dismissive and, at times, outright disrespectful. It was clear that my years of experience and the dedication I had shown throughout my career meant little in this setting. **Lack of Support:** There was a noticeable lack of support from management. Any concerns or suggestions I raised were either ignored or met with condescension. I often felt isolated and undervalued, which was particularly disheartening given my background and the sacrifices I made to return to work. **Workload and Compensation:** The workload was overwhelming, and the tasks were poorly defined, making it difficult to perform efficiently. The compensation was not commensurate with the level of effort and stress involved. This job was far from the easy, rewarding experience I had been led to expect. **Disrespect and Disregard:** As someone who has always taken pride in my work and strived to maintain professionalism, I found the lack of respect and acknowledgment disheartening. My contributions were overlooked, and I was made to feel like a temporary, disposable resource rather than a valued team member. **Tenant Evictions and Mental Anguish:** Adding to the distress was the significant impact of the project’s mismanagement on tenants awaiting rent relief payments. Although these tenants were approved for aid, unnecessary delays caused by missteps in the project's initiation led to mental anguish and preventable evictions. Initially, payments were expected to take 10-14 days, but due to easily correctable issues that my supervisor and I highlighted daily, this process stretched into a 72-day nightmare for tenants fearing eviction at the peak of COVID-19 hysteria. Being evicted during such a time meant these tenants had nowhere to go, compounding their anxiety and stress. **Supervisor Termination and Resignation:** Towards the end of the project, my supervisor, who had been vocal about the need to address these issues, was unceremoniously terminated. It was apparent that management realized the severity of their omissions and wanted to remove anyone who could hold them accountable. His termination felt strategic, not conspiratorial, ensuring that his testimony would not expose their negligence at a corporate level. A month after learning what had befallen my supervisor, I tendered my two weeks' notice, aiming to leave on good terms with HR to keep my employment career unblemished. **Final Thoughts:** My time at Horn LLP was a stark reminder that not all opportunities are as they seem. I strongly advise anyone considering employment here to think twice, especially if you value respect, support, and fair treatment. There are much better places to invest your time and skills.
