Pros

Work/life balance is still good. The office building is nice although rarely utilized and there are some decent snacks there for those who care about that. Flexibility of working location is the number one benefit to working here.

Cons

Sadly, there are more cons than pros here these days. Company strategy is unclear and many leaders don't exhibit great leadership capabilities. Many of the most talented employees are gone and people who remain are spread quite thin in most cases. There isn't much of a company culture anymore. Culture war participation here is divisive and distracts from the real work we're here to do. Recent updates to compensation net out to less money in employees' pockets, and that isn't good news to us. I would caution anyone in product management from joining here as you'll most likely not find the work you would do here fulfilling. You will not find empowered product teams here. Product management here mostly means scrum and backlog management and other product owner type duties.

Health Catalyst Response

Thank you for your more than nine years of dedication to Health Catalyst. Your contributions over this time have been significant, and I deeply appreciate your willingness to share your honest perspective. It’s encouraging to hear that work-life balance and workplace flexibility continue to be positive for you. At the same time, I want to acknowledge your concerns, and apologize that your experience hasn’t lived up to the ideals we describe in the Health Catalyst Way. Leadership is a responsibility we take seriously, and I hear your frustration regarding company strategy and leadership development. We are committed to continuous improvement in these areas and to fostering a work environment where every team member feels heard and supported. We will be using every all-team-member meeting in 2025 to share and emphasize, so that there can be clarity and an ongoing dialogue to answer any questions, our company strategy, as well as monthly updates on the important product strategy work that has been a deep focus as part of 2025 planning, and which work continues throughout 2025. I hope that these discussions will help you understand the company’s strategy, engage in the product strategy development process, and develop confidence in Health Catalyst’s unique differentiation within our areas of focus, and our ability to win as a result. Regarding compensation, we understand that financial security is a critical concern. We continue to benchmark salaries and benefits annually, striving to offer above-market pay, including the recent above-market 5% base salary increase in late 2024. We also remain committed to our strong benefits package, which includes flexible PTO, 18 company-paid holidays, generous 401(k) matches, company-paid life and disability insurance, fitness, and home office reimbursements, online company-sponsored counseling and physical therapy, and education assistance of up to $10,000 annually. We know there is always more work to do in this area, and compensation remains a priority in our 2025 board-approved operating plan. I also hear your concerns about our culture and the broader challenges facing our teams. We want Health Catalyst to be a place where every team member feels valued and respected. Our goal is to create an environment where all individuals can thrive while staying focused on the mission that unites us—enabling massive, measurable, data-informed healthcare improvement. We recognize that strengthening our culture requires thoughtful leadership, and we are committed to ensuring our values guide every decision we make. If you’re open to it, I’d welcome the opportunity to hear more of your thoughts directly and explore how we can continue to improve in a 1:1 meeting with you. I sincerely appreciate your candid feedback and your long-standing contributions to our company. Best, Dan Burton

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
