Payroll tied to management bonuses - therefore, there were not enough employees. - Department Head Hobby Lobby Employee Review

Pros

The pay is decent for retail, but not enough to justify the demanding schedule and expectations of management.

Cons

The district manager has high expectations, which translate to high expectations for middle management (store manager, co-manager), which translate to high expectations for retail workers. Many times we would have to work past our scheduled shift to complete inventory (one time staying until 1 AM - YES, for a store that closes at 8 PM), shelving resets, or stocking seasonal. There were not enough employees (11 full-time employees, 3 managers, 2-3 part-time cashiers) for a store that was roughly 50,000 sq ft. Some days we would be stuck with a 12 hour shift, but once the task was complete our hours would be cut later in the week so that we did not receive the additional overtime pay that we expected. This would also mean that there were only about 5 people working on Fridays and Saturdays. This was difficult when I was a cashier during Christmas. Lines would be incredibly long and I would have no backup. Customers would get angry at me when I was only trying to work as efficiently as possible at the check-outs. We also had to type in each individual price and discount at the register. No bar code scanning or inventory management, it was all manual! While some of my coworkers were pretty cool people, I would not return to Hobby Lobby to work for them.
