Pros
A good place to build 'people skills' and learn how to interact with customers face to face. The customer interaction is usually friendly, and tips (while not technically accepted) may be presented to the employee based on performance. There are plenty of areas to train in (Meat Counter, Dairy, Customer Service, etc.) and generally mediocre compensation for the work expected. It is a good first job.
Cons
There is a lack of competitive compensation, accompanied by poor management and poor employee morale. Depending on the department, there can be a lot of personal dramatic issues and story telling. Also, there is a sever lack of 'creativity' required for any position in any department. Usually any new ideas are frowned upon unless your manager comes up with them.
