Pros
Near Penn Station, so it's relatively convenient for commuters. It has a few excellent products, mostly due to timely acquisitions. Like most print publishers, Facts On File (as this company was formerly called) has had to confront a technological paradigm. To its credit, it has recognized this and refocused its business model and core product strategy. There are some very smart and dedicated people working there, although fewer and fewer every year.
Cons
Where to begin? This is simply an awful place to work. Pray they don't acquire your company. This is all about making the private equity owners happy from month to month. It will all end badly some day. -CEO is a micro-manager who lectures about personal responsibility but empowers nobody. -CEO can be critical almost to the point of abuse. Praise is rare. Rewards are non-existent. -Employees who survive just check in, check out, and try not to make waves. -The only growth comes from acquisitions. Organic product development is insignificant. -New initiatives and product decisions are boldly announced, then countermanded within days or simply forgotten. -Cost control is the one thing the company does very well. Chiefly accomplished via layoffs & salary freezes. -There are no sick days: all days off for any reason are lumped together. -401K match was discontinued years ago. Salary freeze going on 5 years. -No educational benefits. Only life/disability insurance is Aflac, which YOU pay for. Health care is bare minimum. -Forget little perks like holiday parties, free coffee, etc. Even early office closings for holidays aren't announced until THAT day, so you can't plan anything. Sadly, this comes from someone who mostly really liked their job and was personally treated better than many others.
