Pros

In general, a lot of genuine and amazing people work here who are extremely talented and good at their job. (In their Content and Tech Departments for example.) Their vision is also a great one, so you get a lot of reward working within education and for a company trying to improve it. There is a lot of excitement happening here and the company does strive toward being at the forefront of tech innovation and content. They have a great product and their heart is in the right place with it. Their benefits package is also really great with lots of paid time off, extra days if you have to work on a weekend, and an allowance for things like gym memberships/massages/healthy activities.

Cons

I’ve tried to make these points as things you really should know before considering the job. The crux of the problem is, as other reviews state, it is a very young start-up company. With that comes a lot of growing pains such as long hours, a lot of change, some instability, and lofty goals. They are very Sweden-centric. A lot revolves around their headquarters in Stockholm. They just haven’t quite figured out how to work and maintain wellness and happiness with remote workers yet. They also make a lot of decisions that greatly affect their employees abroad without really understanding how that will affect their lives. They move people around the world like chess-pieces rather than human beings which causes a lot of stress. There are leaders who have either never had a job outside of Kognity, or have no experience in education. The growth leadership team is the most junior. They tend to promote people who just did well internally in sales or have been there long enough. This is starting to change, but it’s been a big problem. Lastly, there is very much a "yes" culture where you get a lot of agreement, and even sometimes a lot of hot smoke, but no real action or constructive feedback. They subsequently give a lot of empty promises which causes a lot of frustration and is why a lot of people have left and are leaving. I say all of this not to be malicious, but to give a more precise picture of where this company is at now. I also hope they see this and make lasting change with restructuring to avert the climate they’re heading into. If you’re looking to get into EdTech, education or SaaS, Kognity can be a good stepping stone, but unless they start making smarter management decisions you’ll have a lot of stagnant growth with no feedback on progress or support to take you any further. It's also very much a start-up company and is still learning to walk. With that comes instability, so keep that in mind if you're willing to relocate for them.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you think is not working at Kognity. We are committed to creating an inclusive, transparent and fair environment for all our employees so I’m sorry to hear about some of your concerns - but of course also curious to get a deeper understanding of what we can improve. As you write, we are still very much a start-up company and with that comes instability and constant change. There is always a challenge in balancing being agile and open to change as the company continues to grow fast, and on the other hand provide stability, direction and long-term plans. I believe this might be a core component leading to the feeling of empty promises, as we are working on trying to find that balance. I think you have a fair comment in that we have more to learn about how to make Kognity a great experience for remote employees. We have run many workshops on it and an extensive 5 month project, but I agree that we are not there yet. There’s ongoing work on improving this and thanks for your feedback on it. At Kognity, our leaders have a mix of experience and some are indeed at the beginning of their careers and have been given huge growth opportunities. We believe it is important to find the balance between having junior, mid and senior people in the team, and we may in the past have relied too heavily on attitude and personality, rather than experience. Therefore one focus right now is to bring in a few key senior profiles, and with it, domain expertise, scaling know-how, and leadership experience. One very senior leader +20 years of leadership and tech experience has been recruited and more are on the way :) I think this will be one important component in building an ever-improving Kognity. Once again, thank you for your feedback, it is appreciated! And best of luck in your future endeavours. Sofie Knutsson

Pros

A majority of the people you work with at Kognity have some of the biggest hearts you can imagine. Kind, friendly, genuine, ambitious, and caring; for the most part, everything the company posts in regards to the character of your colleagues is true. The company’s vision is also admirable, and one that you can feel you’re truly contributing to as part of the Kognity team. As far as the benefits package is concerned, it’s top notch, with 6 weeks vacation and the option to purchase 3 additional weeks of vacation, extra time if work is required on weekends, 3 weeks sick time, retirement fund contributions, reimbursements for health and wellness activities, and 100% coverage for medical/dental/vision insurance.

Cons

There are a few things you need to think about if you’re considering taking up employment with Kognity: 1. The company is very fast-moving, and things change almost instantly. More often than not, you’ll be overworked and find your fellow colleagues are exhausted. When Kognity tries to investigate any problem, they take their surface-level findings, hodge-podge together some inadequate solutions, and then pride themselves on “moving quickly to find a resolution.” This simply has not and still does not work, and instead only leads them to dig themselves deeper into the hole of the problem they’re attempting to fix. 2. Kognity provides great exposure to education technology as an industry. However, they grossly overwork and underpay their employees. It was not until stepping outside of Kognity to go to another company within the edtech space and find that entry level starting salary is $20,000+ higher per year for the same exact role (yes, even at edtech start-ups). 3. If you’re not based in Stockholm, you are a complete afterthought to the company. As someone previously wrote, Kognity is very Sweden-centric, and makes a lot of impactful company-wide decisions without considering that, at the time, nearly 50% of their employees were not based in Stockholm. 4. Also noted before, many leaders have not had roles outside of Kognity or lack experience in education, and they are typically the most junior in the company. The leaders they choose, in addition to the lack of qualifications, are typically the outliers when referring to the people being kind, friendly, genuine, ambitious, and caring. If you’re trying to gain a leadership role in the company, particularly on the Growth, Customer Experience, and Tech teams, you must either be a favorite, or become “one of the boys.” In terms of leadership, Kognity fails to recognize the inherent differences that come with “leaders” versus “managers”, as seen in their continuous struggle to break into the market. Having an approximately “20% overall market share” of textbooks within one curriculum when the company offers 3+ curricula, with schools often using Kognity books as a resource rather than a complete textbook replacement (which is the company’s aim to replace the printed textbook) is not successfully “cracking the market.” 5. There is a very big and unstated company “yes” culture. This goes so far as people saying yes to something, even when they know they do not have it in them, in fear of not climbing up the career ladder at Kognity, which as a company promises lots of upward career mobility. It’s a lot of smoke and mirrors when trying to find actual answers to problems, and unless the issue you’ve raised is a priority on the leadership’s radar, you get a lot of “yes” when asking questions or for help, but no concrete action comes of it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. This is much appreciated. I realise this response comes some time after your original message; however, please know that we continuously read all Glassdoor reviews. Our team discusses them internally, and we actively work through any concerns. I would agree that two years ago, we often resorted to more superficial solutions (especially in commercial, but throughout), our leadership team's balance was too junior, and our support for those working outside of Stockholm was subpar. At the time, our salaries were mid-market (according to benchmarks). Since then we have had an active strategy to move to the higher end of the market range. We definitely had — and to some extent still have — problems with a "yes" culture, leading many Kognites to take on too much work. Since your message, we have made many changes within the topics you bring up. To start off with, we have actively recruited a higher amount of senior leaders. This includes leaders with deep domain expertise in education, beyond their functional expertise and leadership experience. We have actively worked to decrease complexity and automate operational workflows. This has given us more room to work proactively and provide sustainable solutions by detecting and addressing underlying issues and root causes to a much greater extent. We strive to deprioritise one item whenever we prioritise something new and are mindful of bandwidth constraints. I'm proud to say we have a much better process now. To ensure we pay competitive salaries in the market, we purchase salary data, collect feedback from peers in the industry, and learn from recruitment processes - we always adjust salaries if we were to see that we would not be at or above market. In short, I appreciate that you took the time to write this message and we have taken your input into account! Over the last few years we have had an above-average employee satisfaction score. We actively monitor this through pulse and survey tools. We are always open to change and have continued to improve the employee experience since then. Wishing you all the best Hugo CEO at Kognity
