Good mission, suboptimal working conditions - Education Outreach Coordinator Learning Undefeated Employee Review

Pros

Great benefits (especially fully-paid health insurance!), coworkers are caring and mission-driven, office is nice and remote work is encouraged on days when not traveling. CEO and senior leadership is open to feedback and discussion and supportive of lower-level staff.

Cons

Was not told I would have to be able to be on my feet all day and lift heavy objects - as someone with chronic pain, this was difficult. This has since been added to job description. Pay is low and not very open to negotiation, uniforms are free but uncomfortable, you will have difficult and infrequent bathroom access (and no access to running water) during school visits. Organization also claims to promote gender and racial equity in STEM while having only one Black employee and consistently misgendering trans staff. You will also be asked to travel to states including Texas and Louisiana - for these two reasons, this job is not recommended for trans folks. LU's main funding sources are DoD, defense contractors, and pharmaceutical companies, so prepare to lecture kids on how great it would be to build missiles and work in big pharma. Overall, the organization's funding sources and structure mean that passionate young science educators are forced to endure difficult working conditions to essentially propagandize under-resourced kids, and are unable to make much positive impact in the 45 minutes they have with each class of 25+ students.

Pros

If you can dream up an idea, this is a place where you can make it happen. Fun and young staff, flexible working environment, lots of work from home opportunities. Every day is different. Managers really care about employees and want to see you succeed.

Cons

Well, it's a nonprofit so you're not going to become a billionaire working here, but the work is meaningful and the mission is true.
