- Low level of pay for the quantity of work you do: although it is above minimum wage, you get no additional benefits and the wage is not worth the amount of stress you go through on a daily basis.
- Inconsistent procedures: during the space of 3 weeks, a particular procedure was changed 4 times and employees were berated for getting it wrong when we hadn't been made aware of the change. Procedures for calling for assistance were never consistent.
- Training is adequate for the type of work you do, but does not prepare you in any way for the types of behavioural challenges you'll encounter. You will meet learners who will hurt you, insult you, refuse to work, damage property with no consequences. When you call for support, you will be treated as though you are dumb for not being able to manage the behaviours, and will constantly be asked if you tried anything before calling for support (calling for support is a last resort: if you're calling, it means you already HAVE tried everything else)
- Favouritism runs this place, not merit. Consultants and mentors
are chosen based on who they're friends with, and the Associate Center Director is chosen because she is the Regional Manager's sister, despite having less experience than almost every other clinician.
- Consultants carry an attitude of "I am better than you" and are not afraid to belittle you in front of learners.
- There is no separate lunch area, so your lunch may be interrupted by students. Additionally, consultants eating in the same room will report everything you say back to management, and you will be called in for jokes at lunchtime taken out of context, complaining about anything, etc. You cannot express frustration without being told that you're creating a negative environment.
- The attitude of 'customer is always right' very much applies here. The clinician is always at fault. Student didn't do all of their tasks? The clinician obviously didn't work hard enough. Student sits in a corner destroying property and refusing to work? Clinician hasn't bothered to motivate or build rapport.
- There is NO progression. They only have a spot for one or two mentors, no spots for extra consultants unless current ones leave, so you will be stuck at the bottom of the totem pole for ages, regardless of your experience.
