Pros

Location, being close to Rockridge BART station since parking spots for employees are limited. The pretty residential neighborhood offers lots of walking routes for noontime exercise. Employee health benefits are good. Many folks stay for the pension benefits. One Friday off a month is in addition to the dozen paid holidays.

Cons

New management may think they are “improving” the company culture or making things more efficient. They are applying the practices of much larger companies, which when used in a lean and mean 70+/- staff size end up being more red tape. The heart and soul of the founders are nowhere to be found as employees now are treated as just expenses that affect the bottom line and they continue to find ways to cut the expenses. New management forgot that before the sale of a sub company, things got done on efficiently and timely even WITH EVERY OTHER FRIDAY OFF! Yes, that one other Friday off was taken away. Employees are reeling from multiple changes being implemented in a short period of time. HR is mostly unresponsive to emails when that is her preferred method to communicate. Even the tenant (leased space in the building) is wondering why employees are not as happy. She sees everyone running around busy and stressed. New management are losing the trust of many of the staff after the 2nd round of layoffs in 2018, (first one happened years ago) which they called “restructuring”. Favored employees don’t get reprimanded as strongly as the others. So many instances of unfair situations to mention. In turn, much of the employee loyalty and pride in the company has been reduced to just sticking around for the benefits.

Pros

Given the opportunity to work at MIEC for 31 years has allowed me the opportunity to work in a variety of positions and build the Member Services Department during the COVID pandemic. MIEC has provided me a safe space where I can express my creativity and pour into my team. I am hopeful that my commitment to MIEC will encourage others to become a part of their legacy and commitment to excellence.

Cons

The upgrade in computer systems can be a challenge. However, MIEC's commitment to encourage continual learning and adaptability have assisted me on my journey.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We’re glad to hear you experienced what we believe is one of MIEC’s greatest strengths: talented, supportive colleagues who care about doing the right thing. We’re also sorry to hear that the work felt unfulfilling. At MIEC, our mission is to serve medical providers by helping ensure access to reliable, competitive medical liability protection—work many of our employees describe as meaningful because it directly supports the doctors who keep our communities and our families healthy. In fact, our 2025 employee engagement survey, which had a 78% participation rate, revealed that the large majority of respondents were happy in their jobs and found meaning and purpose in their work. We also consistently hear that strong peer relationships and commitment to our purpose are central to employees’ day-to-day experience. We recognize that experiences can vary by role and over time, and we’re committed to continuing to strengthen our employees’ experience throughout the organization. Thank you again for taking the time to write, and we wish you continued success.
