Pros
MRV has great prospects, with growing demand for our products and a recognition in the ocean science community that we deliver high quality buoyancy driven products in a variety of form factors. MRV is a small company, which means that you have real impact, and good ideas are welcomed and acted on. Although the pace can get hectic, it is usually a result of having more business than we can deliver, causing some growing pains that have been difficult. These growing pains have been made worse by the challenges in supply chain disruption from COVID, etc. MRV stands in sharp contrast to a startup trying to create demand --- our customers are pushing us to do more, and are committed to our success, as we are committed to theirs.
Cons
Communication and coordination is sometimes difficult. Because of the long lead times associated with building our products, small issues can get magnified and turn into larger ones when communication breaks down. To some degree, this challenge is a result of our success --- we have continued to grow the number of floats we build while we are building the infrastructure required (documentation, processes, etc) needed to keep the growth moving. In other cases, the isolation of COVID lockdowns has made the communication issues more difficult to overcome. All our growth has been bootstrapped so far, so in some cases we are short staffed, making it difficult to deliver on time. This is improving, but needs additional focus to allow MRV to grow to the next level.
