Pros

- Flexibility - Office location - Some great colleagues to work with

Cons

I worked at MCD for almost two years, giving my all to the role. Unfortunately, my experience was far from positive, largely due to the unprofessional and toxic environment created by my manager and HR. Lack of Support and Professionalism: I was assigned a manager who showed no interest in my growth and development. Her passive-aggressive behavior was constant, and she often avoided speaking to me directly, opting instead to have others relay messages or ask me questions. Our weekly check-ins were brief and unproductive, and I never felt comfortable discussing any challenges or seeking guidance. When I finally reached out to HR to request a change in management, they admitted they were already aware of the issues but did nothing to resolve them. Unfair and Excessive Criticism: Despite consistently giving my best effort, my work was rarely acknowledged, and my mistakes—many of which were due to inadequate training—were often met with disproportionate criticism. For example, I was called “unprofessional” and “irresponsible” for minor things, like being a minute late to a meeting or forgetting my keycard in the bathroom once. They even scheduled a 30-minute meeting just to berate me over these small issues, while ignoring the larger picture of my consistent effort and strong work ethic. Poor Training: One of the most frustrating aspects of my job was the lack of proper training. Starting a new job in a similar role made me realize just how much I had not been taught by MCD. The training was insufficient, and I was often left to figure things out on my own, only to be blamed later when mistakes occurred. This lack of support was a major detractor from my experience. Inappropriate Comments from HR: I was also subjected to uncomfortable and inappropriate comments from HR, including racially insensitive remarks, which made the workplace even more hostile. Unprofessional Termination: My termination was the final straw. I was scheduled for a meeting to discuss vacation days, only to be terminated abruptly during the meeting. I wasn’t given a clear explanation, and I wasn’t allowed to speak or defend myself. They immediately cut off my computer access, and when I attempted to say goodbye to my colleagues and pick up my personal items, I was told I wasn’t welcome at the office and that I should meet HR in the parking lot. This cold, disrespectful approach was completely unnecessary and showed a lack of basic human decency. Overall, my experience with MCD was overwhelmingly negative. The environment was toxic, the training was inadequate, and the lack of professionalism was evident at every turn. I would not recommend working here, as it’s clear that the company does not value its employees or foster an environment of growth and respect.

Pros

The relationship of friendship and community that you get to create with your colleagues at McCay Duff will truly be lasting ones! The comradery between staff make the firm a great place to work and build a career in public accounting. We spend a great deal of time working during our 'busy season' and when you can feel the support from the team and the sense of "we're all in this together, " it makes it all worth it. Mentors regularly talk with staff about their paths and where they would like to grow personally and professionally. They encourage staff to take on new challenges (when they are able) and provide opportunities to work on a variety of engagements, which keeps the work stimulating. The firm is people focused 100% not only with it's staff but for its clients as well.

Cons

The firm is a classic public accounting firm and as such we have a natural "busy" season gearing up in January to the end of April. It can be a pressure-filled environment with periodic long hours during this time but it all balances out in the long run because the firm closes on Friday's and reduces to 7 hour work days during the summer months and pays for overtime. Very rewarding for individuals that are dedicated and driven to invest in their future.
