Pros

Medisas has a very compelling vision, and a great mission you can get behind. You can easily see yourself trying to make hospitals better. The individuals that I worked with were fantastic. Medisas did an exceptional job hiring compassionate, intelligent, disciplined and charitable people. It was not difficult to build friendships and work with colleagues. It also provide an opportunity, for those not acquainted with hospitals, to see how care is delivered. Employees were encouraged to visit client sites to gain a better understanding of how healthcare professionals work.

Cons

My disappointment in Medisas stemmed from being unable to dial in on the right thing to work on to move the needle. It was difficult to say whether your efforts had impact on the business or users. The company and team seemed to struggle with knowing whether an initiative was a success or failure. This made me feel undirected, unmotivated and undetermined. I expect that all start ups run into this issue, but I was hoping that our team would be able to improve over time. In my experience, we did not. I think that this is what lead people to feel like they did not have autonomy. It was hard to have employees be autonomous when there were only ambiguous missions, and no clear objectives. E.g. “do what it takes to improve care”, vs “decrease time from lab completion to user reviewing the results.”

Pros

I think Medisas's mission to improve patient care through technology is incredibly impactful. Knowing that our product can help doctors and nurses more effectively care for the sickest people in society motivates me. I also love that each member of the team is similarly motivated by helping to change the world for the better. The team is amazing: smart, capable, humble and caring. No one is ever too busy to help out. The culture is open and honest. There's a lot of opportunity to step up and get involved outside your specific domain of expertise. The CEO is the most determined person I've ever met. He is 100% committed to the vision and mission of the company, having had to endure poor software in hospitals as a doctor. His thoughtfulness and ability to evolve as the company has matured continues to impress me.

Cons

The healthcare industry is very slow-moving and bureaucratic, which can be frustrating at times. Though change for the better in hospital IT is inevitable, it takes patience, fortitude and tenacity. Like all startups, we went through some rocky times and growing pains with the team. Not everyone is cut out for a startup, and not everyone is the right fit for any specific startup. We had to learn some hard lessons on how to best handle that, but we've come out the other end stronger.
