Every company has its pros and cons, but the founders believes they are doing you a favor by hiring you. You will feel under appreciated and walk on eggshells every day. The mixture of good and bad reviews you see generally are because it depends on what team you work on. They like to cover up all their trust/culture issues and bad reviews with the label of "start-up", but the truth is they just don't treat their employees well and have no desire to recognize all those great people I had the honor of working with. It doesn't matter how much good work you have done for them, as soon as you leave, you will be the enemy. You might even become the enemy while working there depending on the month and how sales is going or what good milestone they can tell their VC's to cover up all the internal issues.
