Cons

Management, period. Modcloth was something special when it was run by the original founders. Since they sold to WalMart, and then to Go Global, there isn’t a shred of the original ModCloth culture left. They brought in a parade of incompetent execs that led to ModCloth’s demise, but all the execs were given golden parachutes as a reward for running it into the ground while your average employee lost equity, unvested stock, etc. If you can’t take Wal Mart funding and throw it at a business to succeed, then that’s really saying something about management. Unfortunately management was not replaced and the brand was not given a second chance. Instead, WalMart sold off the company to Go Global. Go Global hired back employees that were fired by WalMart for HR violations, one of which involved homophobia. Why would they hire back previously fired employees that made homophobic comments to others on the team? Oh, because it was their friend. That tells you everything you need to know about their lack of values. At least Walmart took those complaints seriously and acted. They like to paint themselves as this socially minded, feminist and inclusive brand, which it was under the original owners. There isn’t a shred left of the founders values and that’s clearly reflected in what a mess it has become. The two male CEO’s consistently behaved in questionable manners. One would show up drunk 24/7 and sleep off hangovers on communal couches. The next CEO started off ok, but then became increasingly more insane and would frequently yell and demean people in meetings as he lost his grip on producing results. The female CEO they brought in to sell off the business to go global absolutely destroyed what little morale remained. She brought in her crew of henchmen, none of which fit with the culture and turned it into a toxic environment by consistently belittling and demeaning everyone around her. She hated the customer. When go global took over, they laid off half the staff. GG promised that it was temporary, and that positions would be back filled once the acquisition was complete. The pandemic hit, and there was no backfilling. Employees were not listened to. Every decision was made by expensive consulting buddies. The business would have improved had they spent their consultant money on more headcount and retention/development. GG has since sold the company to yet another new owner. Headcount was reduced by 50%....again! So if you like doing the work of 5 people with little concern about your own work life balance, have to constantly adjust to ever shifting strategies, and be belittled and demeaned for not keeping up with the workload of 5 people, then this is the job for you. If you like airing your concerns to management and being told ‘be grateful you have a job’ then this is the job for you. If you like instability and the fear of the next round of layoffs hanging over your head, then this is the job for you. If you like being told to come in during a pandemic, even though the corporate office isn’t essential, then this is the job for you. If you like being told you can’t take a public holiday off work, even as a salaried employee, then this is the job for you. If you like pouring everything you have into a brand you believed in, only to have incompetent leadership who do not care about the brand, customer, or employees come in and berate you, then this is the job for you. If you want a collaborative environment, decent pay, competent leadership, a career path, and rewards for working hard, look elsewhere. The brand will soon be out of business as you no longer have a team of passionate employees or leadership that care about the brand and the customer. You have cutthroat execs that are only in it for themselves and their golden parachute, when this too fails.
