Pros

You go in to work everyday and get to perform research that contributes to the advancement of human knowledge. Management is understanding of employee needs, intelligent, and eager to work closely with their employees. NASA's greatest weakness, its funding, is also a strength to some extent - everyone is here because they want to be here. The center provides a few basic perks to their employees and contractors including monthly social events and an excellent fitness center. The work life balance is also better than most companies in Silicon Valley. Because the pay is not outstanding, management is pretty understanding of your outside life.

Cons

Pay. Unfortunately NASA's funding is not proportionate to the research we undertake. If you want to work for NASA you have to want to work for NASA, no one here is in it for the money. Location. Ames Research Center is in the heart of Silicon Valley so best of luck finding affordable housing. Plan on a large housing budget or a hefty commute.

Incredible WLB, impactful work, sense of pride when talking about what you do.

Have to work with legacy codebases often (like Fortran).

Pros

They tend to have managers who were engineers. And, "we're going to the freakin Moon!"

Cons

Government bureaucracy stuff, and residues of DOGE
