Pros

Coworkers are nice and friendly. Many people are passionate about the work and happy to help others. The managers and the few teams I've worked with are all great. If you are passionate about the work, you'll have the opportunity to work on things you like and have personal growth. Compensation is on par with other tech companies. WLB is great.

Cons

Company vision is wholesome but has limited business potential until AR glasses become as common as smartphone, which most likely is at least 5 years from now. So the company would not grow much until then. Exec leadership team were not familiar with gaming industry, and expanded too fast after the unexpected success of Pokemon Go. They wasted a lot of resources exploring and investing on mediocre game projects. Eventually cut loss and cancelled them and learned the lesson, but as a result laid off a whole office. Some leaders play our own games a lot, but a few leaders can be stubborn or disconnected from player base, or for any consideration, they ended up chose some features that have very small target audiences to work on. They also recently launched a feature despite all the negative feedbacks from the community. Devs can propose ideas, but because the team are always packed, it takes a long time for new ideas to be prioritized. Although devs are passionate and want to make an impact to the game, the process could be challenging.

Pros

Niantic has a unique mission and works on products that blend technology, gaming, community, and real-world exploration. The people are generally smart, passionate, and collaborative, and there are opportunities to work on creative projects with global impact. The company also offers a good learning environment for those interested in gaming, AR, live operations, and location-based products.

Cons

Priorities can shift frequently, which sometimes makes it difficult for teams to stay focused or understand how their work connects to the broader company strategy. Communication from leadership could be clearer, especially during periods of change. Some processes feel reactive rather than proactive, and cross-functional alignment can vary depending on the team.
